What this measures

The average Attainment 8 score of pupils at the end of key stage 4 in state-funded schools in England: their best eight GCSE results, weighted towards English and maths, scored 0 to 90.

What this doesn’t measure

Results in independent schools, or comparisons across years in which grading standards were changed, including the 2020 and 2021 teacher-assessed grades.

Important caveat

Attainment 8 is a summary score across eight qualifications and changes when the qualifications counted or their grading change. Results for 2019/20 and 2020/21 were based on centre-assessed and teacher-assessed grades and are not comparable with examined years; 2022/23 returned to pre-pandemic grading.
