What this measures

DESNZ's estimate of the annual bill for a UK household using 2,700 kWh of standard electricity at the average tariff across all payment methods, in cash terms.

What this doesn’t measure

What any household actually paid: consumption is fixed at the standard level, and households using more or less electricity, or on Economy 7, pay different amounts.

Important caveat

These are modelled bills for a fixed amount of energy at the average tariff, not what households actually spent. They include the effect of the Energy Price Guarantee and the Ofgem cap where those applied, but not the Energy Bills Support Scheme payments made in 2022 and 2023. The gas series on this basis starts in 2022; earlier years used a different consumption assumption and are not comparable. Figures are in cash terms.

Revision history

No period of this series has been revised since it was first ingested here. Revisions are recorded automatically when a later release publishes a different figure for the same period.
