What this measures

Usual residents on Census Day 2021 by where they were born, using the published categories of Census 2021 table TS004: the United Kingdom, the EU countries, other non-EU European countries, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, the Americas and the Caribbean, Antarctica and Oceania, and the British Overseas.

What this doesn’t measure

Nationality, citizenship, immigration status, ethnic group, or when a person arrived. Someone born abroad may be a British citizen and someone born here may not be.

Important caveat

Country of birth is where a person was born, not their nationality, citizenship or ethnic group, and it does not change with time spent in the United Kingdom. The two censuses group the rest of the world differently: 2011 divides it into Ireland, EU countries that were members in March 2001, countries that acceded between April 2001 and March 2011, and other countries; 2021 divides it by world region and, in Europe, into the United Kingdom, the EU (EU14, EU8, EU2 and other) and other non-EU countries. Only the total and "born in the United Kingdom" are comparable across the two, and only those are used to show change. British Overseas territories are a separate 2021 category and are not counted as the UK.
