What this measures

Income Tax received by HMRC in the financial year, gross of personal tax credits, covering PAYE, Self Assessment and smaller elements.

What this doesn’t measure

Income Tax raised in Scotland under Scottish rates as a separate figure, or the tax due on a year's income rather than the cash received in the year.

Important caveat

Receipts are cash received in the period, so they lag the activity being taxed: Self Assessment income tax and capital gains tax arrive up to a year later, and Corporation Tax arrives in instalments. Figures are in cash terms, so a rise partly reflects inflation and a growing economy rather than a heavier tax. Some taxes did not exist in earlier years and their columns are blank rather than zero. HMRC does not collect every tax: council tax, business rates, vehicle excise duty and the devolved Scottish and Welsh taxes are raised elsewhere.

Revision history

No period of this series has been revised since it was first ingested here. Revisions are recorded automatically when a later release publishes a different figure for the same period.
