Breakdowns
What this measures
The number of people held in immigration detention on the last day of the period, in immigration removal centres, short-term holding facilities, pre-departure accommodation and prisons. This is a stock, not a flow.
What this doesn’t measure
The number of people detained at any point during the period, or people on immigration bail.
Important caveat
Entering and leaving detention count occurrences, not individuals: a person detained twice in a period is counted twice. People in detention is the number held on the last day of the period. People held in prisons under immigration powers are included only from 2017. Data from 2026 Q1 onwards is provisional and will be revised in a future publication.
Revision history
No period of this series has been revised since it was first ingested here. Revisions are recorded automatically when a later release publishes a different figure for the same period.
