What is my personal inflation rate?
The headline inflation rate weights prices by what the whole country spends. A household that spends more of its money on food, or on transport, feels a different rate. This applies the ONS’s own price indices for each of the twelve spending categories to the average spending of a one person household in the ONS Family Spending survey, and shows the arithmetic.

Where it comes from
Each category’s price change is the ONS index for July 2026 against July 2025. Its contribution is that change multiplied by the category’s share of your spending. The rate is the sum of the contributions.

What this does and does not measure
The indices are national: the ONS publishes no regional consumer price index, so the same price change applies wherever you live. Within a category, your own purchases may have moved differently from the average basket. Housing here means rents, water and fuel as CPI defines them; mortgage interest and house prices are outside CPI. The weights are a fixed basket for one year, the same method the ONS uses to build the all-items index. This is a calculation on official data, not an official statistic about you.
