What this measures

Median gross pay for full-time employee jobs held by people living in the area, reference April of the year shown, from the ASHE resident analysis held by Nomis. The same statistic as the modern series, carried back to 2002 on current local authority boundaries; it stops in 2023, where the published Table 8.7a series the site reads begins.

What this doesn’t measure

Household income: it is pay for one job, before tax, excluding the self-employed, part-time employees and people not in work. Nor does it measure what employers in the area pay to people who commute in.

Important caveat

The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings samples 1% of employee jobs from HMRC PAYE records, with the reference period the pay week or month including a date in April. Figures are for employee jobs held by residents of the area and exclude the self-employed. ONS colour-codes each estimate's quality by its coefficient of variation; estimates for small authorities can carry a coefficient of variation above 10% and should be read as a range, and suppressed cells ("x") are omitted here rather than filled. Provisional figures are revised when the following year's survey is published.

Revision history

No period of this series has been revised since it was first ingested here. Revisions are recorded automatically when a later release publishes a different figure for the same period.
