What this measures

The Crime Survey for England and Wales estimate of the number of crimes experienced by people aged 16 and over and households in a 12-month period, excluding fraud and computer misuse, which lets the series be compared back to 1981.

People often confuse this with

Police recorded crime ≠ Crime Survey estimateRecorded crime counts offences the police record. The Crime Survey for England and Wales estimates crimes experienced by households, including those never reported. Recording practice changes move the police figure without any change in crime; the survey does not cover crimes against businesses or homicide.

What this doesn’t measure

Fraud and computer misuse, crimes against businesses, homicide, or crimes with no direct victim.

Important caveat

The Crime Survey for England and Wales asks a sample of households about their experience of crime in the previous 12 months. It is a survey estimate with a margin of error, covers people aged 16 and over living in households, and does not cover crimes against businesses, homicide, or crimes with no direct victim. The survey was suspended during the pandemic, so there are no estimates for the years ending March 2021 and March 2022.
