Income deprivation by local authority
The population-weighted average score of each district's small areas on one domain of the English Indices of Deprivation, from the IoD2025 local authority district summaries. A higher score means more deprived on that domain relative to the rest of England. Domain scores each have their own scale and are not comparable with each other or across index editions.

What this map shows
296 of 296 local authority areas have a current value for income deprivation (domain average score), IoD2025 (published November 2025). Classes are quantiles of the areas with data, computed on the server, so the same link always gives the same legend.
The share of the population experiencing deprivation relating to low income, averaged over the district's small areas.

What this does not measure
Deprivation of any individual person or household, change over time (scores are not comparable between index editions), or anywhere outside England. Domain scores are not comparable with each other: each domain has its own scale.
The Indices of Deprivation rank places in England relative to each other at one moment. Scores from different index years (2015, 2019, 2025) are not comparable — the indicators and their weights change — so no change over time is shown for these figures. The index year names the publication: the indicators beneath IoD2025 mostly describe 2021 to 2023. The index covers England only; the other UK nations publish their own, mutually incomparable indices. District summaries average the index's small-area scores, and MHCLG publishes several equally valid summaries: the two shown here (population-weighted average score, and the share of small areas in the national most-deprived tenth) answer different questions and can rank a district differently.
The index year names the publication, not the data: the indicators beneath IoD2025 mostly describe 2021 to 2023. Scores exist to rank places within England on one domain at one moment; they are not comparable between domains, between index editions, or with the devolved nations' own indices.
