What this map shows
335 of 348 local authority areas have a current value for women's pay as a share of men's (female median as a share of male median, per cent), 2025. Classes are quantiles of the areas with data, computed on the server, so the same link always gives the same legend.
Annual medians reflect both pay rates and hours worked, so this ratio is wider than the official gender pay gap, which the ONS measures on hourly pay. It is not that figure and is not comparable with it.

- Denominator
- The male full-time median annual pay for the same area, from the same ASHE table. Both sides come from the same edition, so the periods always match. ASHE Table 8.7a: annual gross pay by place of residence, men and women full-time (ONS).
- Coverage
- Every area where the ONS publishes both medians. Small areas carry wide confidence intervals and either median can be suppressed, which shows as no data.

- Formula
- female full-time median annual pay ÷ male full-time median annual pay × 100
- Stale areas
- Both medians use the newest edition. An area missing either median (suppressed for sample size) is no data, with the missing side named. Nothing is carried forward.

What this does not measure
The official gender pay gap, which the ONS measures on hourly pay to control for hours worked: annual medians reflect both pay rates and hours. It is pay for one job, before tax, excluding the self-employed and part-time employees.
The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings samples 1% of employee jobs from HMRC PAYE records, with the reference period the pay week or month including a date in April. Figures are for employee jobs held by residents of the area and exclude the self-employed. ONS colour-codes each estimate's quality by its coefficient of variation; estimates for small authorities can carry a coefficient of variation above 10% and should be read as a range, and suppressed cells ("x") are omitted here rather than filled. Provisional figures are revised when the following year's survey is published.
Annual pay for full-time employee jobs by where people live. The ONS's official gender pay gap is measured on hourly earnings to control for hours worked; because men working full-time average more paid hours, this annual-pay ratio runs wider than the hourly gap and the two must not be compared. Medians for small areas carry wide confidence intervals.
