MHCLG · IoD2025 (published November 2025) · Local authority
Income-deprived residents by local authority
The share of residents living in income-deprived families — on certain means-tested benefits or low-income tax credits — from the Income Deprivation Domain of IoD2025, averaged over each district's small areas. Unlike the headline IMD score, this is a proportion of people, so it is meaningful in itself and not only as a rank.

What this map shows
296 of 296 local authority areas have a current value for income-deprived residents (income-deprived residents, per cent), IoD2025 (published November 2025). Classes are quantiles of the areas with data, computed on the server, so the same link always gives the same legend.
The published population-weighted average of the district's LSOA domain scores, shown as a percentage of residents.

- Data
- English Indices of Deprivation: local authority district summaries (MHCLG).
- Denominator
- The domain score is itself a proportion of the resident population, published by MHCLG; no further division is done here. English Indices of Deprivation: local authority district summaries.
- Coverage
- The English Indices of Deprivation cover England only. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland publish their own indices, which are not comparable with England's.
- Boundaries
- ONS Open Geography Portal generalised boundaries, Open Government Licence v3.0 (2025-05 BGC v2 LAD_MAY_2025_UK_BGC_V2).
- Basemap
- Ordnance Survey Maps API (Light), used under the OS Data Hub terms.
- Formula
- the published domain score for the district, which is itself a proportion, shown as a percentage
- Stale areas
- The index is a single publication; a district with no published summary is drawn as no data.

What this does not measure
Earnings, wealth or the poverty line: the domain counts people in families receiving certain means-tested support, so changes in benefit rules move it independently of living standards.
The Indices of Deprivation rank places in England relative to each other at one moment. Scores from different index years (2015, 2019, 2025) are not comparable — the indicators and their weights change — so no change over time is shown for these figures. The index year names the publication: the indicators beneath IoD2025 mostly describe 2021 to 2023. The index covers England only; the other UK nations publish their own, mutually incomparable indices. District summaries average the index's small-area scores, and MHCLG publishes several equally valid summaries: the two shown here (population-weighted average score, and the share of small areas in the national most-deprived tenth) answer different questions and can rank a district differently.
England only. The other UK nations are drawn as no data because their indices are not comparable, not because income deprivation is absent.
