26 measures across local authorities

Geographical gaps

How far apart councils sit on each measure, and whether the spread has widened or narrowed: the gap between the 90th and 10th percentile of local authorities, in the first period held and the latest. A wider gap is a wider gap; the page does not say whether that is welcome.

How this page is made

For each period every council reports, the councils’ published figures are sorted and the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th percentiles taken by linear interpolation. The gap is the 90th percentile minus the 10th, in the measure’s own unit; money is in cash terms, so a gap in pounds grows with prices as well as with dispersion, and each measure’s page also shows the coefficient of variation, which does not. A period is used only when at least six in ten councils have a figure for it. Councils on different publication schedules are never mixed into one period.
